Liberals back in Alberta after claiming Calgary riding

Sep 21, 2021 | 8:24 AM

CALGARY – The Liberals recaptured a riding in Calgary after being completely shut out in 2019.

Former city councillor George Chahal edged out Conservative Jag Sahota in Calgary Skyview.

While they took turns leading the polls, Chahal took a sizable advantage late last night.

Chahal pledged in his victory speech to continue his fight for “equity and opportunity” for northeast Calgary at the federal level.

Political scientist Lori Williams says Chahal’s political record in the area helped to flip the riding.

She says he also had a higher profile campaign than Sahota’s.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a campaign stop at the beginning of the election to show his support for Chahal.

The riding was created in 2012 after boundaries were redrawn.

It then flipped from Liberal to Conservative before turning red once again.

Only two other ridings in Alberta didn’t go to the Conservatives last night, with the N-D-P winning again in Edmonton Strathcona and picking up a second seat in Edmonton Griesbach.
