Mobile mammography unit to visit Spirit River, Silver Valley

Sep 23, 2021 | 4:27 PM

Alberta Health Services’ mobile mammography trailer will be visiting the Central Peace next month, with the addition of cervical and colorectal cancer screening available on select days in Spirit River.

The mobile mammography unit will be stationed at the Central Peace Health Complex parking lot from October 18-23 and October 25 and 26.

It will then move to the Savanna Agricultural Society Rec-Plex on October 29 where it will offer mammography services.

As part of a partnership between the AHS Screening Programs and Screen Test, which looks to improve access to cancer screening for women in northern Alberta when mammography is not readily available, AHS says the unit will also be offering cervical and colorectal cancer screening on October 19 and 20 at the Central Peace Health Complex.

Cervical cancer screening will not be offered in Silver Valley during these days although, colorectal cancer screening will be available there on October 29.

AHS says women between the ages of 50 to 74 are at most risk for developing breast cancer, adding a mammogram has been proven to be the most effective way to detect breast cancer.

“Early detection allows for a greater number of options for treatment and a better chance of survival.”

Women between the ages 25 and 69 are also urged to have regular cervical cancer screening using Pap tests, and AHS says everyone ages 50 to 74 should be screened for colorectal cancer.

Appointments can be made for mammography services, cervical and colorectal cancer screening by calling Screen Test at 1-800-667-0604.

Due to COVID-19, Screen Test is taking a number of precautions to ensure the safety of clients and staff. AHS says details will be shared when you call to book your appointment.
