Kings still looking for first win after NWJHL opening weekend

Sep 26, 2021 | 9:06 AM

The County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings opened the 2021-22 NWJHL season with a pair of losses.

On Friday night, the Kings opened the season with a 1-0 loss to the North Peace Navigators in Peace River, despite a 33 save performance from Owen Taylor.

Cory Isaac’s goal at the 5:08 mark of the third period was the only offence that the Navigators would need on the evening, as Christopher Key stopped 23 shots for the shut out.

On Saturday, the Kings staged their home opener against the Fort St John Huskies, and held a 3-2 lead going into the third period.

But four unanswered goals by the Huskies powered them to a 6-3 triumph.

Jared Winkel scored twice and added a pair of assists for the visitors, who also got goals from Conrad Wiebe, Logan Kimmie, Alex Nimmo and Kurtis Lee.

Keenan Moberly, Bailey Hartman, and Cody Graw replied for the Kings, who return to action Thursday night in Fairview.
