Grande Prairie records 38th COVID-19 death, adds 163 new cases over weekend

The City of Grande Prairie recorded its 38th COVID-19 death over the weekend.

The death was one of 23 reported by Alberta Health over the previous three days, bringing the province’s COVID-19 death toll to 2,645.

Of the 23 deaths, three of them were in the North Zone. The deaths in the North Zone included a man in his 30’s, as well as two females in their 70’s and 80’s. All of these deaths included pre-existing conditions.

Meantime, Grande Prairie added 163 new cases of COVID-19 along with 112 recoveries, bringing the active case total in the city up to 508.

In the County of Grande Prairie, there were 97 new cases identified and 45 recoveries. It now has 286 active cases.

Across Alberta, there was a total of 5,181 new COVID-19 cases identified over the weekend (1,882 on Friday, 1,541 Saturday and 1,758 on Sunday) on 45,781 tests, resulting in an 11.3 per cent test positivity rate.

Active case totals, as of September 26 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 508 active (+50)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 286 active (+52)
  • MD of Greenview: 139 active (+19)
  • Birch Hills County: 10 active (-2)
  • MD of Spirit River: 10 active (-3)
  • Saddle Hills County: nine active (-)
  • MD of Peace: 186 active (+28)
  • MD of Fairview: 64 active (+15)
  • MD of Smoky River: 47 active (+18)
  • Big Lakes County: 138 active (+18)
  • Clear Hills County: 49 active (+7)
  • County of Northern Lights: 93 active (+12)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 54 active (+16)
  • Mackenzie County: 235 active (+25)

Across the province, hospitalizations grew by two up to 1,063, while ICU patients ballooned by 22 to 265.

In the North Zone, 142 people are in hospital (up nine), while 13 people are in the ICU (up one).

In Grande Prairie, 66.7 per cent of residents who are eligible (those aged 12 and up) have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 56.1 per cent of the eligible population have been fully vaccinated.

In Alberta, 83 per cent of the eligible population have received one dose of the vaccine, while 73.8 per cent of those eligible are fully vaccinated.
