Impacts 25,000 employees

Province implementing proof of vaccination policy for Alberta Public Service employees

The province is implementing a proof of COVID-19 vaccination policy for all Alberta Public Service employees.

The announcement was made Thursday during a news conference with provincial officials, who stated the nearly 25,000 employees among the province’s public service will have until Nov. 30 to submit proof of full vaccination.

Proof of one dose will be required beginning Oct. 15.

“Our top priority throughout this pandemic has been ensuring the health and safety of all Albertans and that includes our public service,” said Premier Jason Kenney. “We know vaccines are the best way to keep everyone safe so it makes sense for the Alberta Public Service to make this a requirement.”

Employees who do not provide proof of vaccination will be required to obtain an accommodation as per the Alberta Human Rights Act, or will have to provide a negative PCR or rapid test result that is no more than 72 hours old for every scheduled workday or shift, on an ongoing basis.

“Public service employees work in many settings all over the province, including work sites where proof of vaccination is already a requirement,” said Public Service Commissioner Tim Grant.

“Requiring our employees to be vaccinated provides a safe work environment for our staff and protects the Albertans we serve.”

Grant says staff who refuse to comply won’t be fired and will be placed on unpaid leave.

School boards will also be asked to implement a vaccine mandate for workers, including teachers.
