Alberta government providing up to $5 million for Driving Back to Work grant

Oct 1, 2021 | 4:02 PM

The Alberta government says it will be providing a total of $5 million in 2021-22 to 500 unemployed Albertans who have the opportunity to obtain a Class 1 driver’s licence.

The Driving Back to Work grant is focused on making sure workers have the skills they need to find success and a job as a professional truck driver.

The provincial government says as of October 1, 400 people will be selected to begin their Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) in the coming weeks.

The grant will cover around 90 per cent of the cost of the MELT program. Drivers are required to take part in the MELT program before they can do their commercial carrier road test.

Since the Driving Back to Work grant program was implemented, the province says they’ve allocated $3 million and 300 Albertans were approved for funding.

Of those 300 Albertans helped, 249 people completed the program and earned their Class 1 licence.

The truck driving industry has warned that by 2023 there could be a shortage of 3,600 commercial drivers in Alberta.
