snowfall possible, likely more rain

Snow possible over next few days in Grande Prairie area

Oct 4, 2021 | 1:12 PM

The forecast for the Grande Prairie area shows the region could see the snowflakes fly for the first time this fall.

Environment Canada is predicting that between Monday and Wednesday a cold front will make its way into the region, potentially bringing snow with it.

Justin Shelley, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, says while there is snow heading towards the region, it likely won’t stick to the ground.

“The precipitation should be mainly rain, or maybe a bit of mixing with some wet snow,” said Shelley.

“Generally speaking, the snowfall accumulations are going to occur over the higher terrain, so closer to the B.C. border, and further south toward the Grande Cache region. For the most part, the city should be mainly rain.”

Shelley says while temperatures will drop over the first three days of the week, they aren’t expected to creep below zero during the day, which will help keep the roads safe for motorists and turning that snow more into rain.

“Temperatures are looking to remain above the freezing level. It should just keep things as regular rain with a bit of mixing in there, especially as we head into tomorrow (Tuesday) and Wednesday.”

While the snow could fly, Shelley tells EverythingGP this cold front is expected to move out of the region after Wednesday, adding we’ll get back to more seasonal temperatures by Thursday and into the Thanksgiving long weekend.

“By the end of the week, we’ll see temperatures come back up close to normal.”

Environment Canada is predicting highs between 9-13 degrees from Thursday until Thanksgiving Sunday.
