People being asked to thank a teacher on World Teacher Day

Oct 5, 2021 | 3:28 PM

People are being asked to thank a teacher on October 5, in order to help mark World Teacher Day.

Peace Academy of Virtual Education teacher Melanie Golding is hoping people can take time to say thanks.

“We love what we do. We really do and we’re happy that we get to come to work every day and interact with children and teenagers. But we do feel the stress and this year, I think teachers need a little bit of a lift,” she explained.

Golding adds the last two years have been difficult for classroom teachers.

“Just the uncertainty of going back and forth between online (and) in-person with restrictions, being able to be that structure and consistency for the kids.”

Golding says teachers do wonder if they are able to reach their students as that is easier to do in person.

“Teachers are working really hard this year. They’re able to do sports. I work out of a building with a school. I can hear teachers setting up volleyball and sports and extra-curricular activities for the kids so that they (students) have those opportunities that they didn’t have last year.”
