Hunters reminded to follow rules & regulations with season underway

Oct 8, 2021 | 12:20 PM

With the hunting season underway, hunters are being reminded to continue to follow the rules to ensure a safe experience is had.

Sgt. Shawn Graham with the Grande Prairie RCMP says there are some specific rules hunters should remember before heading out into the bush.

“When you’re transporting firearms, they must be unloaded. Your ammunition should be stored separately and secured, (and) you should have the action of your firearm left opened to ensure that it is unloaded.”

Sgt. Graham adds it’s very important to follow the rules if you leave a firearm inside your vehicle.

“When your vehicle is left unattended, firearms must be locked in a trunk or a lockable compartment and a firearm must be out of sight and the vehicle must be locked,” he said.

“Hopefully, this will deter someone from breaking into your vehicle and stealing your firearm.”

He tells EverythingGP while hunters are mostly good with following the rules, it’s important for the RCMP to send out this message yearly as a reminder about what can and can’t be done.

“These are just some of the tips we thought we’d remind people about. Since it is the season for (hunting), it’s a good opportunity to remind people to be safe who are going out with firearms and going hunting.”

Hunters are also reminded to always carry their Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) when they’re going hunting, in case identification is needed for any situation.
