Landfill Tag System

Annual weight limit being added to Clairmont landfill tag system

The County of Grande Prairie is updating its landfill tag system at the Clairmont Centre for Recycling and Waste Management.

Reeve Leanne Beaupre explains the changes, approved at last week’s council meeting, will will see a weight limit be set at 2,200 pounds (1,000 kilograms) per calendar year for each household. Households would then be subjected to tipping fees for any waste disposal in excess of that.

“It’s a benchmark. We’re going to start the program there to see if there are certain people that are using over the limit or if not,” Beaupre said.

“It will give council the opportunity to review whether we should increase the amount people should be able to contribute for free or whether or not it’s adequately reflected in the 1000-kilogram limit.”

This means garbage going directly to the face of the landfill will be included in the annual limit on the tag.

Beaupre explains that landfill tags will be issued per household.

“This allows you to be able to do yard cleanup, and if you happen to be doing some small renovations that you would contribute directly to the face of the landfill, that will give you the increased amount of weight that you can contribute to the garbage.”

Beaupre adds the recycling program and the take and leave program will not count in the total weight limit for the year.

“We really want to make sure we’re encouraging people to recycle and anything that’s reusable that could be a benefit to someone else, that they contribute it in the recycling area to the take and leave program.”

Beaupre tells EverythingGP the weight limit of 1,100 kilograms is to help track the usage of the landfill and the people using it.

“Over the last little while, we’ve seen that the tag system has been used for maybe not the same reason that it was first implemented in. We’ve seen some commercial activities being used on a residential tag.”

A new software system will be implemented at the landfill which will monitor waste disposal.

Beaupre says once the software and everything else is in place, residents will have the opportunity to apply for their tags.
