Grande Prairie records two deaths from COVID-19, active cases drop below 400

The City of Grande Prairie recorded two more deaths from COVID-19 over the Thanksgiving long weekend, bringing the death toll in the city up to 44 since March of 2020.

The deaths were among five reported to Alberta Health over the weekend in the North Zone, ranging in age from a female in their 30s to a woman in their 80s.

There were 33 deaths across the province reported to Alberta Health as a result of COVID-19, bringing the province’s death toll up to 2,863.

Meanwhile, the City of Grande Prairie recorded 78 new cases of COVID-19 between Friday and Monday, along with 145 recoveries, bringing the active case total in the city down to 383 as of the end of day Monday.

In the County of Grande Prairie there were 34 new cases over the same four day period, along with 98 recoveries. There are now 146 active cases there.

As a whole, Alberta added 3,358 new cases between Friday and Monday (1,085 on Friday, 1,039 on Saturday, 628 on Sunday and 606 on Monday). Chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, says the test positivity rate ranged between 7.9 and 9.2 per cent during that time.

Active case totals, as of October 11 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 383 active (-71)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 210 active (-64)
  • MD of Greenview: 102 active (-33)
  • Birch Hills County: Eight active (-8)
  • MD of Spirit River: 11 active (-)
  • Saddle Hills County: 27 active (+7)
  • MD of Peace: 104 active (-23)
  • MD of Fairview: 47 active (-19)
  • MD of Smoky River: 46 active (-7)
  • Big Lakes County: 111 active (-6)
  • Clear Hills County: Eight active (-8)
  • County of Northern Lights: 42 active (-12)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 32 active (-19)

Across the province, hospitalizations dropped by 48 to 1,053, while ICU patients dropped by eight to 242.

Of those admitted into intensive care with COVID-19, 202 are unvaccinated, 20 are partially vaccinated and 20 are fully vaccinated.

In the North Zone, there are 164 people in the hospital (down six), while 12 people are in the ICU (up two).

In Grande Prairie, 69.9 per cent of people who are eligible have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine (57.7 per cent of the total population), while 58.7 per cent of the eligible population has been fully vaccinated (48.6 per cent of the total population).

In Alberta, 85.3 per cent of the eligible population has received one dose of the vaccine while 76 per cent of those eligible are fully vaccinated.
