Clayton unofficially claims narrow victory over Friesen in Grande Prairie mayoral race

Jackie Clayton has unofficially claimed a narrow victory over Eunice Friesen to become the next mayor of the City of Grande Prairie.

With 10 of 10 polls reporting in the city, Clayton holds a 135 vote lead over Friesen (4,270 to 4,135). The unofficial result makes Clayton Grande Prairie’s first elected female mayor.

Clayton had been serving as Interim Mayor since January 2021, after the departure of former Mayor Bill Given.

Only three incumbents will be returning as councillors, as Chris Thiessen, Dylan Bressey and Kevin O’Toole have been unofficially re-elected.

Grant Berg, Wendy Bosch, John Lehners, Gladys Blackmore and Mike O’Connor are set to be the five new councillors in Council Chambers.

The unofficial results for the City of Grande Prairie municipal election are as follows:

Mayor:

1. Jackie Clayton: 4,270 votes – 44.70%
2. Eunice Friesen: 4,135 votes – 43.29%
3. Bryan Petryshyn: 837 votes – 8.76%
4. Glyn Grüner: 310 votes – 3.25%

A total of 9,763 residents voted in the election, equating to approximately 21.7% of eligible voters.
