Grande Prairie records 45th COVID-19 death, 50 new cases over weekend

There was one COVID-19 related death reported to Alberta Health in the City of Grande Prairie over the weekend, bringing the city’s death toll to 45 since the start of the pandemic.

The death was one of three COVID-19 related deaths reported to Alberta Health in the North Zone over the weekend, bringing the death toll up to 335 since the start of the pandemic.

The three deaths reported in the North Zone included a female in her 80’s and a male in his 70’s, both reported on October 15, and a male in his 30’s reported on October 17. Authorities say all of these cases had pre-existing health conditions.

There were 30 total deaths linked to COVID-19 across Alberta reported to Alberta Health over the weekend, bringing the province’s death toll up to 2,976.

Meantime, the City of Grande Prairie recorded 50 new cases of COVID-19 and 60 recoveries from October 15-17, bringing the active case total in the Swan City to 277.

In the County of Grande Prairie, there were 29 new cases and 28 recoveries recorded over the weekend. There are 131 active COVID-19 cases in that region.

As a whole, Alberta added 2,181 new cases following the completion of 30,242 tests between Friday and Sunday, resulting in a 7.2 per cent positivity rate.

Active case totals, as of October 17 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • MD of Spirit River: 19 active (-)

  • MD of Smoky River: 23 active (-9)
  • Big Lakes County: 124 active (+20)
  • Clear Hills County: Five active (-)

Across the province, hospitalizations dropped by 19 to 981, while the number of ICU patients dropped by four to 225.

Of those admitted to intensive care, 192 are unvaccinated, 10 are partially vaccinated, and 21 are fully vaccinated.

In the North Zone, there are 155 people in the hospital (down, three), while 16 people are in the ICU (down, one).

In Grande Prairie 70.2 per cent of people who are eligible have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine (58.2 per cent of the total population), while 59.6 per cent of the eligible population has been fully vaccinated (49.5 per cent of the total population).

In Alberta, 85.8 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 76.7 per cent of those eligible are fully vaccinated.
