Municipal Election Day goes Monday in Grande Prairie and across Alberta

Oct 18, 2021 | 6:28 AM

Municipal Election Day is October 18, and residents in the City and County of Grande Prairie and other municipalities across Alberta will be electing new mayors, councillors and school board trustees.

In the City of Grande Prairie, Returning Officer Arlene Karbashewski says voting locations for Monday’s election have changed from the 2017 election.

She says there are eight voting locations pre-established across the city, which are open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday.

“If you want to know how to determine which voting station is yours, you can go on our website and check out the voting stations by neighbourhood.”

Karbashewski says the voting stations are aligned with neighborhood boundaries.

“For example, if you live in College Park, you will be going to voting station number three, which is the St. Joe’s Catholic Church, and if you’re in Mission Estates, you would be going to voting station number seven, which is the Four Points Sheraton hotel.”

Voting locations will also be on postcards mailed to each household.

“So, the reference is fairly easy this year to determine where you should be voting on election day,” said Karbashewski.

County residents living in divisions which have been acclaimed are still encouraged to cast a ballot Monday for the referendum items and senate nominee elections.

Residents will need to bring some identification with them to vote Monday. In the city, Karbashewski says anyone wanting to vote at their designated voting station must bring identification which prove a few things.

“Your ID must show a City of Grande Prairie residential address. You need to be at least 18 years old, a Canadian citizen, and a resident of the city.”

Karbashewski adds there are alternatives to showing ID for recent arrivals to Grande Prairie, which she says can include a few different things.

“If they’ve set up their utilities of their TELUS phone bill (at) their new address, they can show a downloaded copy of their TELUS bill or their utility bill right on their cell phone and that’s acceptable.”

Identification with only a post office box number will not be accepted.

The City says live election results will be streamed on Youtube and EastlinkTV community channel 610, from 7:30 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Live election results can also be viewed at results.cityofgp.com

A full list of candidates running for the City of Grande Prairie Council can be viewed on EverythingGP’s Municipal Election Page.

In Grande Prairie, electors will be voting for one candidate for mayor, up to eight councillors, up to seven for public school trustee or up to five for separate school board trustee in Ward 1

Two referendum questions along with the senate nominee election will also be on the ballot for residents to vote on.

The two referendum question are as follows:

  • Should section 36(2) of the Constitution Act, 1982 – Parliament and the government of Canada’s commitment to the principle of making equalization payments – be removed from the constitution?
  • Do you want Alberta to adopt year-round Daylight Saving Time, which is summer hours, eliminating the need to change our clocks twice a year?

Masks must be worn inside all polling locations, and physical distancing measures will be in place.
