Peace Draft Horse Club gearing up for 2021 Northern Spirit Light Show

Oct 18, 2021 | 5:21 PM

Members of the Peace Draft Horse Club (PDHC) are gearing up for their annual Northern Spirit Light Show, which is set to be up and running by mid-November.

Jody White, who is the president of the PDHC, says both volunteers and club members have been out on the grounds setting up Christmas lights since late August.

“We could decorate along the racetrack, then after Labour Day, all the campers were out of the campground, and we could start decorating in there,” White said. “We have to get everything in there before the ground freezes, or else the workload goes up considerably.”

White suggests the group has become more efficient in setting up the light show each year they do it.

“We’re getting pretty good at this, and we’re getting pretty close to being done already and we’ve only been at it for four weekends. It usually takes us eight or nine weekends, and we did it at this time last year.”

White explains they will be following all AHS recommendations, adding the light show will look similar to last year.

“There will be no hot chocolate, no open firepit, and no horses unfortunately again this year, unless things lighten up for us here and they give us the okay for it.”

This means the light show will be drive-thru only again this year. With that, White says ticket prices will remain at $15 per vehicle.

White says last year, they raised over $100,000 for local non-profits and schools. He hopes the light show will bring a smile to people’s faces and get everyone in the Christmas spirit, just like they were able to for the 2020 Northern Spirit light show.

“The way the world was going, we needed a little bit of normal, so there were lots of times, people came through two, three, four times in an evening, and I think they just had to get out of their house doing something… and it gets everyone in the Christmas spirit too, which is nice.”

White tells EverythingGP Food Bank donations will also be accepted again this year.

The light show will run every Thursday to Sunday night starting November 18. Then, starting December 9, the light show will be open daily through New Year’s Eve, excluding Christmas Day.
