Alberta announces new protection measures for continuing care facilities

Oct 19, 2021 | 5:49 PM

The Alberta government has announced that starting on October 25, there will be some new protective measures coming into place at continuing care facilities across the province.

As of next Monday, masking will be required for all visitors at continuing care facilities at all times, regardless of their vaccination status. This includes while visiting a resident’s room.

With this policy coming into place, health officials strongly encourage unvaccinated family members and friends to not visit residents at this time. Facility operators are able to implement additional rules if they choose, such as requiring proof of vaccination.

“Protecting vulnerable Albertans is always our top priority,” stated Premier Jason Kenney.

“Even with remarkably effective vaccines, residents in these facilities remain at risk, which is why we are increasing the protection around them. We will continue doing whatever it takes to protect vulnerable Albertans and slow the spread of COVID-19.”

Exceptions will be made to the masking policy for those who have a difficult time communicating with others, such as those with dementia or who have a hard time hearing.

Another added measure coming into place will include making all new residents who are transferring to a continuing care facility from a hospital or returning from a hospital stay longer than 24 hours quarantine until they test negative for COVID-19. A PCR test must be used and be conducted throughout AHS.
