Local events marking Small Business Week in Grande Prairie

It is Small Business Week across Canada.

Grande Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce CEO Tanya Oliver says the theme this year is “Together We Build.”

“Every year, we celebrate the contributions of our small businesses and the pandemic has really made it clear that we need to work together to get back on track.”

She adds local operators are hopeful of better days ahead.

“We’re nothing but resilient up here. I think that businesses are trying to learn what they can from the hardships that have happened over the last while and trying to remain resilient and optimistic and continue to offer customers what they are looking for, and looking to connect with them in new ways as well.”

Oliver says the Women in Business lunch Tuesday was a sell-out. It was a combined in-person and virtual event.

The Chamber Awards of Distinction will be given out Thursday. A record number of nominees, 119, are up for awards in several categories. It will also be a combination in-person and virtual event.

Also on Tuesday, the Chamber announced a campaign it hopes will boost local business, known as ThinkLocalGP.

Oliver says they want people and businesses to stop and think about what it means to support local operations.

“When you’re thinking local, you are shopping local, you’re supporting local, you’re exploring local and then we do have the money cycle back into the community,” she said.

“It creates jobs, it supports charities, builds parks and fixes the road with the tax dollars. It just altogether works to build a thriving economy and a community that we can all be proud of.”

ThinkLocalGP includes pre-paid VISA cards in amounts o $25, $50, or $100 to be used only at local businesses. A 20 per cent discount is currently available on these.

Oliver says a web page has also been set up with more things to be added to that page in the future. A video is coming next month.
