Beaupre eager for another term on county council

Oct 22, 2021 | 2:40 PM

Leanne Beaupre has officially been acclaimed to serve another term as the Division 3 councillor for the County of Grande Prairie.

Beaupre brings a wealth of experience with her to the table, having been on county council for almost 18 years and holding the position of reeve since 2012.

Amanda Frayn, Kurt Balderston, Brian Peterson, Steve Zimmerman and Robert Chernek are five of the new faces that have been elected to serve on county council.

Beaupre tells EverythingGP that county residents should have confidence in their newly elected members.

“The newly elected officials that’ll be representing the County of Grande Prairie will be a very good fit for the upcoming council for this next term,” she explained.

“The old councillors look forward to having new faces around the table and we really look forward to seeing what direction this council takes.”

Beaupre adds council’s priority heading into the new season will be getting everyone up to date on the important issues facing the county.

“One of the most current items would be the Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework (ICF) that is being arbitrated between the City and County of Grande Prairie,” said Beaupre. “So, bringing those council members up to speed about what the process means and why we got to where we are through arbitration.

“Also introducing them to our other municipal leaders across the County of Grande Prairie and outside of our regional borders. That’s going to be important as well, many of our (previous) council members held positions as chairs or committee members on provincial boards and we’d like to introduce those new members to those committees.”

Another focus for Beaupre and council will be getting all the new councillors trained and ready for council meetings once they resume.

On October 25, county council will be sworn in for the next term. Members of council will also pick who will be the reeve to be the main spokesperson for their area.

Beaupre says if asked by council to continue to be reeve, she would gladly do it.

“If council has the confidence in me remaining the reeve, I would certainly accept that privilege and continue in that position.”

All councillors will officially be sworn in at 10:00 a.m. on Monday.
