City releases official municipal election results

Oct 22, 2021 | 3:23 PM

The City of Grande Prairie has announced the official 2021 municipal election results.

The confirmed results mean that Jackie Clayton has been elected to the position of Mayor. Clayton will become the first female Mayor in Grande Prairie’s history.

Clayton ended up winning the race over mayoral candidate Eunice Friesen by 135 votes, 4,270 to 4,135.

Joining Clayton in the council chambers will be eight city councillors.

Dylan Bressey, Chris Thiessen and Kevin O’Toole were all re-elected to another term on council.

Grant Berg, Gladys Blackmore, Wendy Bosch, John Lehners and Mike O’Connor will fill out the remaining five spots after they were elected Monday.

The Mayor and city councillors will be sworn in at a meeting on Monday, October 25 at 3:00 p.m.

The City of Grande Prairie says it is standard practice for election results to be considered unofficial until four days after the election has passed, because of provincial legislation.

Andre Ouellette, Joan Nellis, Rob Martin, Paulette L. Kurylo, Donna Koch, Ray Buziak and Chris Johnston have all officially been elected to the public school board.

Michelle Boisvert, Michael Joesph Ouellete, Russ Snoble, Jermiah English and John Croken are officially elected as separate school trustees for Ward 1.

As for the referendum questions, there were 6,382 people who voted in favour of removing equalization from Canada’s constitution, while 2,804 voted against the motion.

There were 5,269 Grande Prairie residents who voted against removing daylight savings time in Alberta, while 4,140 people wanted the province to get rid of it.

Official provincial results on the referendum votes will be announced on Tuesday.

The 2021 Municipal Election saw 21.7 per cent of eligible voters turnout and cast a ballot on election day.
