Grande Prairie records 48th COVID-19 death, active cases continue to drop

The City of Grande Prairie recorded its 48th death as a result of COVID-19 on October 21.

The death was one of 12 reported to Alberta Health over the last 24 hours and one of three reported in the North Zone.

The North Zone deaths include a male in their 70s, 60s and 50s. All of these cases had pre-existing conditions according to Alberta Health. It is not known which one is linked to Grande Prairie.

Meantime, Grande Prairie added 27 recoveries and 11 new cases, there are 199 active cases in the city.

In the County of Grande Prairie, there were two new cases and 10 recoveries, bringing the active case total there down to 105.

Across Alberta, there were 656 new cases of COVID-19 identified on 10,732 tests, resulting in a 6.1 per cent test positivity rate. There are 10,037 active cases in Alberta.

Active case totals, as of October 21 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • Saddle Hills County: 17 active (+2)
  • MD of Peace: 75 active (-7)
  • MD of Fairview: 20 active (-2)
  • MD of Smoky River: 16 active (-1)
  • Big Lakes County: 114 active (-7)
  • Clear Hills County: Six active (-)
  • County of Northern Lights: 19 active (-6)

Across the province, hospitalizations dropped by 23 to 889, while the number of ICU patients dropped by ten to 191.

In the North Zone, there are 132 people in hospital (down four) and nine in the ICU (down two).

Of the 191 people in the ICU with COVID-19, 156 of them are unvaccinated.

In Grande Prairie, 71 per cent of people who are eligible have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine (58.9 per cent of the total population), while 61.5 per cent of the eligible population has been fully vaccinated (51 per cent of the total population).

In Alberta, 86.4 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 78.3 per cent of those eligible are fully vaccinated.
