Voter turnout up from 2017 in County of Grande Prairie

Two per cent more voters in the County of Grande Prairie went to the polls for the municipal election this year than in 2017.

As results from Monday’s election became official Friday, the County posted a 26 per cent voter turnout, as 4,895 residents cast a ballot in the election. That is up from the 3,400 residents who voted in 2017 (prior to absorbing Hythe).

Four divisions saw candidates elected by acclamation, while Division 2, 4, 5, 8 and 9 all held councillor elections.

The Council which will serve the County of Grande Prairie for the next four years is as follows:

Division 1: Amanda Frayn

Division 2: Kurt Balderston

Division 3: Leanne Beaupre (incumbent)

Division 4: Steve Zimmerman

Division 5: Bob Marshall (incumbent)

Division 6: Peter Harris (incumbent)

Division 7: Brian Peterson

Division 8: Karen Rosvold (incumbent)

Division 9: Robert Chrenek

Despite some divisions having acclaimed candidates, residents in those ridings still cast ballots for the Alberta Senate Election, the two referendum questions and school board trustees.

The top three candidates for the Alberta Senate Election, as voted by County of Grande Prairie residents, were Pam Davidson (2,298 votes), Erika Barootes (2,204) and Mykhailo Martyniouk (1,558 votes).

County residents also voted against adopting year-round Daylight Saving Time, with 2,542 votes for “No” and 2,294 votes for “Yes”.

Residents were in heavily in favour of removing the practice of equalization payments from the constitution with 3,934 votes for “Yes” and 885 for “No”.

All Councillors will be officially sworn into Council at Monday’s Organization Meeting. At that meeting, Council will elect the Reeve and Deputy Reeve.
