Former Calgary mayoral candidate gets 17 years in jail for fentanyl trafficking
CALGARY – An Alberta judge has sentenced a former Calgary mayoral candidate to 17 years in prison after he was caught with a kilogram of high potency fentanyl hidden in cereal boxes.
Jonathan Sunstrum ran for mayor in the 2007 and 2013 civic elections and garnered fewer than 2,000 votes each time.
He was arrested following a traffic stop near Canmore in January 2019 during which police found about one kilogram of fentanyl 10 to 15 times more potent than what is typically sold on the streets in Western Canada.
The fentanyl was found in a hidden compartment inside Sunstrum’s truck.
