Initial Story

Grande Prairie RCMP say they are investigating reports of someone allegedly impersonating a peace officer in the city Friday night.

Police say the report came in at around 9:45 p.m. when the caller told authorities after turning westbound onto 116 Avenue from 92 Street shortly before that, an older model white Ford Explorer turned on red and blue LED flashing lights on the dash of the vehicle.

After the caller pulled to the side of the road, an adult male suspect approached the caller and told them it was a joke.

The caller then drove away and the suspect followed the caller for a short time before turning northbound onto Lakeland Drive.

The suspect is described as having a dark complexion and was approximately 18-20 years of age. He is also described as having a tall, athletic build and was wearing a short sleeve shirt with a police badge on a gold chain.

“Citizens are reminded that they can request identification from anyone identifying themselves as a police officer,” says Sgt. Shawn Graham with the Grande Prairie RCMP.

“When doing so, citizens can request to see the officer’s police badge as well as a police photo identification card which includes a photo of the officer, their name, date of birth and badge number. Citizens can also call the police non-emergency number to verify an officer’s identity.”

Anyone with any information on this incident is asked to contact the Grande Prairie RCMP at 780-830-5700 or their local police.
