Grande Prairie RCMP ask caution be kept top of mind for Halloween

As Halloween has arrived in Grande Prairie, the RCMP are asking residents of all ages to keep safety top of mind.

Sgt. Shawn Graham with the Grande Prairie RCMP says whether the plan is to go out trick or treating, be at home, at a gathering or driving, safety should be kept top of mind.

“It’s always important to follow tips here to help people be safe, both those that are in vehicles and those that are trick-or-treating.”

For young trick-or-treaters, Graham says it is important for adults or older siblings to be out with them.

He says walking on sidewalks and crossing at street corners or at dedicated crosswalks is crucial to maintaining visibility to traffic.

“And on that, having a bright costume or even just reflective tape or glow sticks. I’ve seen lots of people with glow sticks that help people be able to see them, especially if they have a dark costume,” suggests Graham.

“And then maybe staying in well-lit areas, not cutting through people’s properties, or taking shortcuts heading from house to house.”

Graham suggests drivers out on Halloween night should plan their route ahead of time, slow down, and pay close attention to the road, as there will be an increased amount of people walking around that night.

“Pay close attention to the little goblins, creatures, and superheroes out and everyone that will be out, and maybe plan extra time to get to your destination.”

Graham says citizens should also use caution when driving near parked vehicles on the side of the road.

“Although we don’t teach kids to do this, they might dart out from in front of the car or behind the car from a driveway or something like that.”
