Alberta expands COVID-19 third dose eligibility

Nov 3, 2021 | 4:32 PM

A greater number of eligible Albertans will soon be able to receive a third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Premier Jason Kenney says, starting on Monday, November 8, the following groups will become eligible for this:

  • Any Albertan aged 70 or older
  • First Nations, Metis, and Inuit (FNMI) Albertans aged 18 or older
  • Healthcare workers who provide direct patient care
  • People who received “viral vector” shots such as ones from AstraZeneca

For all of these categories, people will need to have received two shots at least six months prior.

“We continue to act on the latest evidence to inform our decisions on our vaccination program to ensure Albertans have the best vaccine protection available to them,” says Kenney.

“Booster shots can add important additional protection from COVID-19, especially for the vulnerable. If, and when, we receive scientific advice to further expand availability of booster shots, we will act without delay.”

The reason the age requirement for FNMI people is lower than the rest of the general population is because Kenney says they have been at higher risks of serious complications from COVID-19.

Approximately 85 per cent of patients currently in ICU with COVID-19 are not fully immunized.

The premier attributes higher vaccination rates to the recent drop in COVID-19 cases.
