Grande Prairie RCMP offer advice on guarding against package theft

Nov 5, 2021 | 6:00 AM

Grande Prairie RCMP are offering some advice on how online shoppers can keep packages being delivered to their home from being stolen.

Constable Lindsay Ralph says there are a few ways to do this.

“An important one, when you order online, is to ensure that you are tracking your shipments and that you know where it is going to be delivered,” she explained.

“So, whether you decide to have it delivered directly to your residence or have it shipped to a local processing facility, you can have (it sent) there; and just to ensure that you get the updates and notifications of where your package is.”

Ralph says it might also be a good idea to have packages delivered to the back door rather than the front. There can also be lockboxes set up or someone can pick it up and hold onto it for you.

She adds police want to remind the public that these thefts do occur.

“And just try to be proactive so that a terrible thing like that doesn’t happen where a package is removed from your front step.”

“When somebody reports it to the police, we do keep a record of it in our police files and if someone does report it to the police, we do investigate the matter.”

Ralph says reporting any theft is important.

“If you do suspect a package has been stolen or removed from your front porch, do report it to the Grande Prairie RCMP and do notify the company that you purchased the item from.”
