International Paper grants nearly $100K to seven local organizations

Nov 6, 2021 | 7:00 AM

International Paper in Grande Prairie handed out nearly $100,000 to seven local organizations as part of its charitable grant program.

Mill Controller at International Paper in Grande Prairie Wade Doris says the seven organizations were chosen for the funding because of their focus on education, hunger, health and wellness, disaster relief, or initiatives working to improve the planet.

“IP has a series of causes which they have identified as priorities for the giving fund, which education and health and wellness are the two key ones we were able to hit a number of efforts of this year.”

The seven organizations sharing $97,500 for 2021 went towards three local groups towards education, including the Grande Prairie & Area Environmental Sciences Education Society, the Grande Prairie Public Library and the Grade 3 Reading Academy.

There were also four organizations which received funding for health and wellness, including Camp Tamarack, KidSport Grande Prairie, STARS Air Ambulance and the Grovedale Agricultural Society.

Doris says this grant program is crucial to support the communities IP mills are located in, including here in Grande Prairie.

“International Paper started this charitable giving fund many, many years ago, so when they bought the pulp mill here in Grande Prairie six years ago, we are now able to tap into that giving fund every year.”

Doris adds this allows the mill to look at needs in the community every year and help invest in friends, families, and neighbours.
