Rebranded men’s football team coming together

Nov 7, 2021 | 7:00 AM

Organizers say forty players have committed to being with a local men’s football team.

The Peace Country Cowboys were first established in 2019 and replaced the defunct Grande Prairie Drillers in the Alberta Football League. The team did not play last year because of the pandemic.

Cowboys spokesman Owen Zawyrucha says this is a team for the entire Peace Region, not just Grande Prairie.

“We’re a men’s football team that caters to everybody around the Peace Country, so that would be Valleyview, Grande Prairie, Peace River, all those kind of places.”

“We’re essentially just trying to come together as one entity and that is kind of what the rebrand was doing is including was getting everyone into that.”

Zawyrucha says local bantam and high school programs mean there are a lot of talented players available in the Peace.

He adds anyone who wants to try out is welcome and no previous experience is necessary. The team has both Facebook and Instagram pages set up for anyone interested.

Zawyrucha says players will be expected to sign contracts binding them to certain standards.

“You will not have any misconduct that represents us as a team or us as a community. It is pretty much just saying that you will be respectful while you play on our team, whether that be on the field or off the field.”

Zawyrucha says the team is hoping to play its games at CKC Field but would go to Legion Filed if CKC isn’t available.

The season is expected to start in late May.
