$2.5 billion carbon-neutral ammonia and methanol production facility to be built at Greenview Industrial Gateway

Nov 10, 2021 | 10:17 AM

Northern Petrochemical Company (NPC) has announced plans to construct a $2.5 billion net-zero carbon emission carbon-neutral ammonia and methanol production facility in the Municipal District of Greenview.

The facility will be located at the Greenview Industrial Gateway (GIG). Construction on the facility is set to begin in the summer of 2023 and will hopefully be completed in the fall of 2026.

The project is anticipated to create about 4,000 jobs over the three-year construction period and 400 full-time permanent jobs once the plant is completed.

“The announcement of this huge new job-creating project adds even more momentum to Alberta’s exciting economic recovery,” said Premier Jason Kenney.

“Northern Petrochemical’s decision to invest $2.5 billion in ammonia and methanol production shows that Alberta’s natural gas vision and our bold petrochemical strategy is working to create jobs while diversifying our economy, and ensuring a future for our resource industries.”

This multi-billion dollar facility will become the first of its kind in Canada, with plans to utilize carbon capture and storage to help produce low-carbon products that can be used in energy, agriculture and helical industries.

During a news conference in Grande Prairie, Kenney said NPC could have built a plant like this anywhere, but they chose Alberta.

Geoff Bury, the President and CEO of NPC, says building this project in the region just made sense.

“After looking at possible locations nationally and globally, we decided that Alberta would be the best home for this project. New developments here are a strong signal that Grande Prairie and the MD of Greenview are committed to this industry and have the motivation to help bring these projects to life,” he explained.

“The Greenview Industrial Gateway and the Alberta Petrochemicals Incentive Program are both examples of the right infrastructure and supports in Alberta to create jobs and grow a cleaner energy future.”

The M.D. of Greenview says the new facility accounts for 295 acres of land.

“Processing natural gas to carbon-neutral value-added products at the source is the right path to lower overall emissions in the future,” said Greenview Reeve Tyler Olsen.

“This project might be based on industry, but with the overall attention to creating an eco-industrial development, it is one that Greenview can be proud of.”
