‘GrandeCon’ comic convention set for July 2022 as Odyssey House fundraiser

Grande Prairie’s version of Comic-Con will soon be coming next summer as part of a fundraiser for the Odyssey House Woman’s Shelter.

GrandeCon is a massive comic book convention set for July 15-17 2022.

Director of GrandeCon and CEO of Wonderland games Vincent Joyall describes the three-day event as a premier comic book and entertainment expo, where residents will have the opportunity to meet some of their favourite celebrities.

“Including not just actors and voice actors, but people in the animation industry, comic book artists and writers, and we will be bringing people in the industry as well so directors, editors, production design, set designers,” he explained.

“So, there will be an awful lot of very cool and interesting people in Grande Prairie on the weekend of July 15, 16, and 17.”

Joyall says planning of the comic convention fundraiser has been in the works for roughly two years and is a partnership between the Wonderland, Unlimited Media, and the Odyssey House.

“This is an event for the entire family. The way the layout will be it’s perfect for Grande Prairieians to bring their grandkids for the weekend, or an interesting date night where a couple can come out and see their favourite celebrity or watch them do a VIP or Q and A panel.”

Joyell says the Odyssey House hopes to show their gratitude to the community and donors for continually supporting their services to provide high-quality support services to the area.

All of the funds raised from the event, will be given to the Odyssey House towards annual budgetary needs, which he says will allow the shelter to continue those high-quality services.

“(This event is) unlike any comic convention in the world, this is a comic convention with heart.”

After working with the comic convention director in Prince George, Joyell explains they thought bringing a similar event to the Grande Prairie region would be the perfect fit.

“It’s incredible how many similarities in Prince George and Grande Prairie and the fact that that event brought such big stars to Prince George, we knew that we could do the same thing in Grande Prairie.”

With the convention being a three-day event, Joyall suggests getting the full three-day pass as there will be no shortage of things to do and see.

“Gaming tournaments, vendors that sell comic books, novelty items, pop and movie memorabilia as well as celebrity panels, Q and A’s and premier gaming events with things like Pokémon, video games, Magic the Gathering, War Hammer and board games.”

He believes this will be a fundraiser that will be remembered for years to come.

“It will be the best fun you can have in Grande Prairie that weekend, that’s a guarantee.”

The event is set for July 15-17 2022. Tickets can be purchased here.
