High Prairie RCMP arrest assault suspect following lengthy pursuit

Nov 19, 2021 | 10:51 AM

High Prairie RCMP have arrested a suspect following an investigation into an alleged assault in the area of Peavine Metis Settlement on November 7.

While en route to the scene, officers say they observed the suspect travelling on Highway 749.

Police say an initial traffic stop was initiated, however, the driver failed to stop. Further traffic stops were conducted and mounties say the suspect allegedly pointed a long-barrel rifle out the drive window, attempting to shoot police.

RCMP say they continued to follow the vehicle in an attempt to arrest the suspect, when, according to police, the driver of the vehicle stopped on a nearby range road and pointed the firearm at police again.

The RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Police Dog Services (PDS) were deployed to assist, along with surrounding RCMP detachments to locate the suspect.

On November 9, High Prairie RCMP Drug Unit took 40-year-old Jared Calliou of Peavine Metis Settlement into custody in High Prairie without incident.

Police say Calliou has been charged with 10 offences including assault with a weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unauthorized possession of a firearm and careless use of a firearm.

Following a judicial hearing, Calliou was denied bail and remanded into custody. He is set to appear in High Prairie Provincial Court on November 22.

As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be released.

High Prairie RCMP thank the residents of Peavine Metis Settlement for their cooperation.
