Culverts, ditches unsafe for childs play: County

Nov 23, 2021 | 3:09 PM

Officials with the County of Grande Prairie are reminding residents of the dangers posed to children playing in and around ditches and culverts.

Assistant Manager of Parks and Recreation Nora-Lee Gilkyson says this as children may see something like a culvert as something to explore.

“However, it is important that parents remind their children of what could happen when they extend their outdoor play to areas with public infrastructure.”

County officials say since the purpose of culverts is to divert water, it may be partially or wholly filled with water at any time, especially during the freeze and thaw cycle early winter and spring can bring about.

“Aside from the sharp edges and presence of water, culverts present the added danger of a child becoming stuck inside, especially if they are towing a sleigh or bringing other play objects along with them,” adds Gilkyson.

“In sharing this safety message with families, the County is focusing on education and awareness to highlight the potential dangers.”

Gilkyson added It is hoped County families will include the topic of culverts in safety talks with their children going forward.
