Operations ramping back up at Wapiti Nordic Ski Club

Nov 23, 2021 | 11:15 AM

With the snow that has fallen over the last seven days, some trails at the Wapiti Nordic Ski Club have opened up to the public.

The Wapiti Nordic Ski Club is a popular destination for those who enjoy getting outdoors and going cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.

Michael Morgan, President of the Wapiti Nordic Ski Club says the ski trails are expected to be in excellent shape this winter.

“We benefited through the fall of it being fairly dry. The last number of years, we’ve had portions of the trail that were difficult to access and continued to be wet. This year, we’ve pretty well got the entire base open, which is about 35 kilometres of trails,” Morgan explained.

With the trails in good shape for the year, Morgan said that is extra good news for people who are new to the sport of cross-country skiing.

He tells EverythingGP because of the pandemic last year, staff noticed lots of new faces attempting the sport at the club. He is hopeful momentum will be able to continue to build.

“We’re anticipating we’ll have memberships be on that higher side. I think a lot of the people that we saw for the first time last year, the comments from them were it was amazing to get out and the facility was something they weren’t aware of. We are looking for similar numbers this year.”

Anybody is welcome to head to the club and try to snowshoe or ski. There is a daily fee you can pay or a membership you can purchase.

All of the money collected by the ski club goes straight towards the maintenance of the facility and trails.

As we get further into the winter months, Morgan mentioned lessons and classes will start up for both amateur and experienced skiers.

“In addition to just the regular skiing, we have quite a few programs,” said Morgan.

“We are certainly able to help both novice and experienced skiers enjoy this sport and improve their skills (while) appreciating the outdoors and trail system that we have.”
