Walker excited to represent Canada at 2022 Olympics

Beaverlodge’s Geoff Walker is heading to Beijing in February to represent Canada’s curling team at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Walker and Team Gushue earned the right to represent Canada at the Olympics on Sunday night, when they defeated Team Jacobs 4-3 in the Canadian Olympics Curling Trials final in Saskatoon.

Walker tells EverythingGP, representing Canada at the Olympics was something he didn’t expect to happen in his career.

“Obviously it was a dream of mine and a goal of mine. So few Canadian curlers get to experience the Olympics when it only comes around every four years. The depth is so strong in Canada, so I’m very fortunate.”

Before the trials started, Walker said in an interview with EverythingGP that the Canadian Olympic Curling Trails was “the best event in curling.”

Walker added his team felt confident going in, and now feels even more confident heading into Beijing now that they’ve qualified for the Olympics.

“We’ve had a solid season so far. We’ve won three of the four events we played in and we’re putting everything together. We’re playing well, doing everything right and training hard,” he said.

“We’re going to take a bit of a break here, enjoy it, and then start getting ready for the Olympics in February.”

Sunday was also a special night for Geoff, as he got to spend the victory with his wife Laura. Laura also curled in the trials over the last 10 days, but was unable to earn a spot.

“It was awesome to have Laura here competing and stay around for the final and watch. Unfortunately, my parents were looking after our son, so they weren’t able to make it down, but they were able to watch on TV. It was awesome to have her here.”

Walker and Team Gushue will take a break until January before returning to the ice. There are a couple of grand slam of curling events they’ll compete in before they head to Bejing.

Walker mentioned his team will likely create their own type of bubble before heading off to the Olympics in late January.

The Olympic curling tournament is scheduled to get underway on February 2, two days before the opening ceremonies on February 4.

Walker wanted to thank all of his fans in the Peace Region for their warm messages.
