Grande Prairie Curling Centre hosting men’s provincials qualifier

Dec 3, 2021 | 6:00 AM

Seven teams will be playing for two spots at men’s provincials this weekend at the Grande Prairie Curling Centre.

Executive director Colin Griffith says the winners will go to the provincials also taking place in January at the downtown arena.

“Certainly, we want to extend a wide-open, welcome invitation to all of the curling fans in the entire Alberta and BC Peace Country as we have curlers playing this weekend from all parts of the Peace Country.”

Teams skipped by Peace Region curlers Graham Powell, Daylen Vavrek, Jeff Ginter, and Scott Webb will all be there.

Griffith adds five of the 12 spots at men’s provincials have already been decided based on results from Alberta Curling Series and World Curling Tour events.

“This weekend, the other seven berths are being competed for in three different locations; one in Fort McMurray, one in Cochrane, Alberta, and one here at our club here in Grande Prairie.”

The first draw is at 7 p.m. Friday night. The first provincials qualifier will be determined in Saturday’s 7 p.m. draw with the second being decided in Sunday’s 2:30 p.m. draw. There will also be draws at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Alberta’s Restriction Exemption Program is in place at the Grande Prairie Curling Centre.
