Drivers asked to watch for wildlife on highways

Dec 5, 2021 | 6:00 AM

The Grande Prairie RCMP is reminding drivers to be on the lookout for wildlife crossing the roads, especially during the winter months.

Since September, police say they have noticed an increase in reports of collisions with wildlife on local roadways.

Cst. Lindsay Ralph with the Grande Prairie RCMP says wildlife can come up out of nowhere on the roads, as they are difficult to see, especially at night and in periods of snow or fog.

She adds if it is possible, travelling during daylight hours can help drivers prevent a collision with wildlife.

“It is much easier to see (in daylight) if any animals are standing along the road or in the ditch or a field nearby,” she explained.

However, if motorists are travelling during hours of darkness, Ralph tells EverythingGP it is important to pay close attention to the road and follow the posted speed limit.

“When you’re driving, make sure your lights are illuminated on your car and they are cleaned off because in the winter they can get dirty with the sand and snow.”

If wildlife such as a deer or moose is spotted, Ralph reminds motorists to slow down and stay alert for potentially more animals.

“It’s important to remember that if there’s one there, there’s maybe more. So we are not sure and sometimes we can’t see all of them, and they can be down in the ditches,” said Ralph.

“And of course, those animals can be unpredictable, we don’t know what they are going to do when a vehicle is driving by them.”

If an animal is located deceased on a roadway and is impeding the flow of traffic, contact the Grande Prairie RCMP at 780-830-5700 or local police detachment.
