Watchdog to investigate two latest violent arrest videos involving Quebec City police

Dec 6, 2021 | 11:15 AM

QUEBEC — The province’s police watchdog says it will investigate a Quebec City police officer caught on video during a pair of violent arrests earlier this year.

In a statement, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes says a single officer was identified by the police force and it will investigate the circumstances of the arrests captured on videos recorded Oct. 17 and Nov. 20.

The two incidents are among several videos that have come to light involving the Quebec City police force since late November.

They are separate from videos of two violent altercations that occurred just hours apart on Nov. 26 and 27, including one involving Black teens outside a nightclub.

Five officers were suspended with pay in those two cases, which are currently under investigation by the province’s police ethics commissioner.

Public Security Minister Geneviève Guilbault says the police force informed her of possible criminal offences in the two earlier videos, prompting her to ask the watchdog to investigate.

Quebec City police said in a brief statement that investigators from its professional standards division had reasonable grounds to believe a criminal offence was committed.
