City giving Accessible Transit free tours for Northern Spirit Light Show

Dec 8, 2021 | 5:00 AM

The City of Grande Prairie is hoping to give those who use accessible transit a chance to see the Northern Spirit Light Show up close before Christmas on December 25.

The tours will take riders every Friday to Sunday on December 10-12, 17-19 and 22-24.

Manager of Transit Services for the City of Grande Prairie Steve Harvard says this is a popular service amongst riders.

“This was done in previous years through DTS (Disabled Transportation Society) when they were on their own entity,” he explained.

“It didn’t happen in 2020, but it is certainly something we support and speaking to the community, it is something that they appreciate.”

The rides for those who use accessible transit is completely free and begin at 6:00 p.m. on ride nights. Riders are asked to book an appointment in advance with their driver or the dispatch centre at 780-830-7433 if they want to take part in the tour.

Since the announcement was made last week, he says there is a lot of demand for the tour.

“This coming Friday and Saturday and the following Friday (December 17) is already booked up,” he said.

“We’ve got good interest and are hoping as we spread the word out, we’ll get more people calling and taking advantage of this opportunity.”

Those participating in the ride will get the full tour and are also welcomed to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the food bank.

Riders will also be picked up and dropped off at their original location.
