Storm snap winless skid with shootout victory over Bonnyville

Dec 8, 2021 | 8:09 AM

November 12 was the last time the Grande Prairie Storm tasted victory, when they beat the Canmore Eagles 2-1.

That was until Tuesday night.

Dayne Tews scored in the fifth round of the shootout, as the Storm beat the Bonnyville Pontiacs 3-2 to end an eight-game winless streak.

It did not look good at the start for the home side, as Sebastian Tamburro was allowed to walk out from behind the net just 1:06 into the opening period and stuff the puck behind netminder Aidan Feddema.

But the Storm would bounce back before the halfway mark of the period, as Zach Brooks would bang home a rebound to knot the game up at one heading into the first intermission.

Brooks would pick up his second of the night in the second period, as he deflected home a Kayden Skulmoski point shot.

But for the third straight game, the Storm could not hold a third-period lead, as Austin Saint wired home a wrist shot to tie the game up at two to force overtime and eventually a shootout.

Edge Lambert also scored for the Storm in the shootout, while Tamburro had the lone shootout goal for the Pontiacs.

Feddema made 26 saves in the Storm goal, while Bodee Weiss kicked aside 41 shots for the Pontiacs.

The Storm are back in action on Friday night, when they host the Calgary Canucks in their annual Teddy Bear toss game.

Fans are encouraged to bring a new teddy bear to Friday’s game, and then throw it onto the ice after the Storm score their first goal.

The bears will be collected and donated to the Pediatric department at the new Grande Prairie Regional Hospital.

Puck drop Friday night is 7 pm.
