Grande Prairie residents asked to clear snow and ice from sidewalks

Dec 9, 2021 | 4:47 PM

Due to recent weather conditions, Grande Prairie Enforcement Services is reminding property owners to clear the snow and ice off sidewalks adjacent to their properties within 24 hours of the most recent snowfall or deposit of ice.

This comes after the city says there have been several complaints of icy or snow-covered sidewalks in neighborhoods.

Enforcement services officials say keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice is crucial to keeping safe and accessible neighborhoods in the community.

“Pedestrians rely on sidewalks as an important transportation connection and keeping them clear during winter conditions helps maintain safe and accessible neighbourhoods.,” says a news release from city hall.

Administration says Enforcement Services is taking an education-first approach to inform homeowners they are responsible for clearing snow and ice on sidewalks.

However, residents who do not clear their sidewalks adjacent to their property could be subject to a fine as per the City of Grande Prairie Traffic Bylaw.

Anyone with questions on sidewalk clearing is asked to contact the City by calling 311 or emailing info@cityofgp.com.
