Wheelchair accessible vehicle added to Wapiti Taxi fleet

Dec 10, 2021 | 3:05 PM

Wapiti Taxi has added a new van to its fleet of vehicles.

On Friday, the taxi company unveiled a new wheelchair-accessible van that will become a part of its rotation of vehicles.

Grande Prairie City Councillor Kevin O’Toole is a member of the Accessibility Advisory Committee of Grande Prairie and became the first paying customer to ride in the vehicle Friday.

He tells EverythingGP it has taken a long time to get a vehicle like this operating in the city.

“I am very happy. The words are hard coming out of my mouth right now because this is something that was much needed,” O’Toole expressed.

“We have accessible transport, it does a majority of the job, but if somebody wants to go to a wedding and it is just outside of town and it is late at night, they aren’t going to get that. So, this is an opportunity (for that).”

O’Toole adds an addition of a vehicle like this doesn’t just impact residents in the Grande Prairie area, but also people visiting the region.

“I think it will be a great addition to Grande Prairie. Somebody comes in from the airport, they can phone this cab and get into town.”

“You aren’t relying on a dispatcher to get a van in there to work with the rest of the people, this is a win for everyone.”

O’Toole credits Cecil Pizzey for getting the cab in Grande Prairie. Pizzey himself is in a wheelchair and wanted to get a vehicle like this to make getting around town easier and more accessible for people in wheelchairs.

You can ride inside the cab by requesting it when calling Wapiti Taxi at 780-539-4333
