Locals gearing up for annual Christmas Bird Count

Dec 13, 2021 | 1:15 PM

Local bird enthusiasts will be participating in the annual Christmas Bird Count this Saturday.

The yearly event has residents in Grande Prairie and around North America get out in their communities and discover what types of birds are living in the region during the winter months.

Spokesperson for the Christmas Bird Count, Margot Hervieux is encouraging anyone interested in participating to come out this Saturday.

“The group meets at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning at the Muskoseepi Park parking lot to divide up the area and assign people so everyone is covering the area as much as we can. We then head out and explore the area to see what we can find.”

If people don’t want to go out looking for birds on Saturday morning, Hervieux says that is ok, because you can do the Bird Count closer to your house if you would like.

“You can just have a cup of coffee, sit in your window and watch a bird feeder all day and provide your data that way, or you can get out, go for a walk or go for a drive.”

All of the data is collected by Hervieux and can be sent to her by email at hervieux@telusplanet.net

Hervieux adds there are lots of different species of birds that call the Peace Region home over the winter.

“Every winter, we get lots of chickadees, magpies, ravens, woodpeckers. Some years, we get some things we don’t expect like robins… It is always fun to be watching for those ones as well.”

The year 2020 saw 32 species of birds identified in the Grande Prairie count, a little above average. There were 25 identified in the Beaverlodge count, a little below average.
