EDSON, Alta. – RCMP say a 21-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder and other offences in the shooting death of a man in west-central Alberta last month.

Police say officers responded to a report of a shooting at a business in Edson, Alta., on Nov. 4.

Insp. Rick Jane says a man shot an employee of the store during an attempted robbery.

He says the employee, who he identified as 44-year-old Cordell MacLellan of Edson, was rushed to hospital where he later died of his injuries.

Jane says another employee was assaulted after the shooting inside the store.

He says Brent Dumas of Yellowhead County, Alta., was arrested Saturday and charged with first-degree murder, possession of a prohibited firearm, possession of a firearm contrary to an order and assault with a weapon.

Dumas was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Edson Provincial Court on Jan. 18, 2022.
