Extreme cold warning back in effect for Grande Prairie area

UPDATE: The extreme cold warning issued for the Grande Prairie area has ended. Temperatures are expected to rise heading into the weekend.

The entire Peace Region and most of northern Alberta has once again been placed under an extreme cold warning by Environment Canada.

This includes the Grande Prairie-Beaverlodge-Valleyview forecast area.

There is also an extreme cold warning out for the BC Peace.

The weather office says temperatures in some Peace Region areas are expected to drop below minus 35 celsius on Thursday night, with the windchill having it feel in the minus 40 to 45 range.

They add to watch for cold-related symptoms, like shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes, as frostbite can develop in a matter of minutes in such temperatures.

The cold snap is expected to come to an end by Saturday. Friday is calling for a high of -26, while Saturday calls for a high of -16.
