Construction set to begin on new Spirit River senior housing project

Dec 20, 2021 | 2:23 PM

The Government of Alberta says construction is set to begin on a new seniors housing project in Spirit River in spring 2022.

The $24.8 million project will provide much-needed homes to seniors with a range of care needs in Spirit River.

According to the province, the development will replace the Pleasantview Lodge and will have an increase of 92 units. Of the new units, 40 will be lodge spaces and 52 units will be designated supportive living spaces to help seniors age in the community as their needs change.

“The Town of Spirit River, along with our surrounding communities known as the G5, are very excited to see shovels in the ground for the spring of 2022,” stated Spirit River Mayor Tammy Yaremko.

“The 92-bed seniors’ lodge will allow for our seniors to age in place in their community where their family and friends reside with the added benefit of continued health care with their doctors and pharmacists. We look forward to this project beginning and the economic spinoffs our community will benefit from.”

Minister of Health for Alberta Jason Copping says this will provide seniors in the region with a much-needed resource.

“This investment in Spirit River underscores our commitment to looking after our seniors by strengthening continuing care capacity across Alberta. New designated supportive living units will enable residents to receive high-quality care, services and supports in the heart of their community.”

The project will create around 175 jobs and will add more permanent jobs once the facility is fully operational. Construction on the facility is expected to be completed by 2024.

The Government of Canada and Alberta will be providing $19.8 million towards the project thanks to the Canada-Alberta Bilateral Housing Agreement under the National Housing Strategy.

The project was made possible from the Lodge Partnership Program, which is a joint initiative between the ministries of Health and Seniors and Housing.
