Wembley to celebrate winter solstice with parade Tuesday

Dec 21, 2021 | 6:00 AM

The Town of Wembley is hosting its first-ever winter solstice parade Tuesday evening.

Charmaine Baker who is the Recreation Coordinator for Wembley says with December 21 marking the shortest day of the year, they decided it was the perfect day to celebrate.

“It’s just a short little parade, I believe right now we have eight or nine floats that will go around this one loop, and everyone will have their vehicles decorated in Christmas lights.”

The decorated vehicles including ones from local community members, the AG Society, Parks and Recreation, Fiber Optics, Huskey, and Public Works will roll out from the Wembley Elementary School at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Barker explains the idea of the light-up parade sparked after attending one similar in Drayton Valley earlier in December.

“I thought it was fantastic and figured we could give it a try here and see if we could change over our original plan to this,” she added.

Baker says the plan initially was to host a more elaborate festival, however, due to uncertainty with the weather, she explains they had to shift their plans.

“We were hoping to have sledding, ice skating at an outdoor rink, snowshoeing, and a fire with a hot chocolate bar and smores,” she said.

“When I was originally planning it, the upcoming forecast was showing we were not having any snow or cold enough weather to freeze the rink so, I had to change plans up last minute.”

Baker tells EverythingGP fireworks were supposed to follow after the parade as well, however, due to unforeseen delays in B.C., the fireworks were unable to arrive on time.

The vehicles for the parade will follow a designated route throughout Wembley, a map of which can be found below.
