County approves two stormwater ponds for limited recreational use

Dec 22, 2021 | 12:23 PM

Two stormwater ponds will be eligible for recreational usage this winter in the County of Grande Prairie.

The two neighbourhood stormwater ponds which will be available for use in the County will be located at the Whispering Ridge and Westlake neighbourhoods in Clairmont.

Back in November, the County announced it was beginning a one-year pilot program to look at potentially using stormwater ponds as recreational facilities over the 2021-22 winter season and into the future.

“This pilot project promotes active living in the County by providing low-cost recreation opportunities, while also balancing safety concerns and resident expectations of stormwater pond recreational access,” said Christine Rawlins, Manager, Parks, and Recreation.

The ice depth on these ponds will be checked regularly to ensure they remain safe to skate on. Signage will be posted at both ponds to notify residents if it is safe or not safe to skate on. The ice must be at least 20 centimetres thick for recreational activities and 25 centimetres for the safe usage of snow-clearing equipment.

Rawlins mentioned activities such as skating, broomball and shinny will be able to take place on these ponds.

While these ponds are now usable for recreation activities, residents can also check out other skating options on the County of Grande Prairie’s website.
