County of Grande Prairie records 13th COVID-19 death

The County of Grande Prairie recorded its 13th COVID-19 death for December 21.

The death was one of five deaths reported across the province, bringing the province’s COVID-19 death toll to 3,299. Of those, two deaths were reported in the North Zone, there have now been 408 deaths related to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

According to Alberta Health officials, the deaths in the North Zone include a female in her 60s and a male in his 40s, both had pre-existing health conditions.

Meanwhile, the County recorded two new cases of COVID-19 and one recovery, leaving the active case total there at 35.

The City of Grande Prairie recorded two new and three recoveries on December 21, bringing the active case count in the city down to 42.

Alberta as a whole added 1,346 new cases following the completion of 11,516 tests, resulting in a 11.7 per cent test positivity rate. There are 7,065 active cases in the province.

Active case totals, as of December 21 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

Across the province, hospitalizations grew to 326 (down three), with 65 of those patients in the ICU (down four). Of those in the hospital, 141 are unvaccinated, while in the ICU, 52 of the 65 patients are unvaccinated.

In the North Zone, 39 people are in hospital (same), six of whom are in the ICU (same).

In Grande Prairie, 68.8 per cent of those eligible (ages five and older) have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 63.2 per cent of those residents have been fully vaccinated.

In Alberta, 89.1 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 85 per cent of those eligible are fully vaccinated.
