Resource Centre for Suicide Prevention offering supports over holidays

The Resource Centre for Suicide Prevention is reminding residents in Grande Prairie and the Peace Region that it is here for them over the holidays.

With the holidays bringing stress to some and new COVID-19 restrictions being implemented on Christmas Day likely adding more stress to those struggling Tammy Monro the Resource Coordinator at the Resource Centre for Suicide Prevention says there are several free tools out there to help you get through various different situations.

“The first place I always like to recommend is called ‘Help In Tough Times.’ It’s run by Alberta Health Services and It’s just a collection of all of the supports, services and resources that somebody might need, depending on what it is they are looking for.”

Monro tells EverythingGP their facility has seen an increase in people seeking mental health help and resources in the lead up to Christmas.

“We have seen a bit of an increase in people reaching out for support. A lot of the time they are just looking for where to go and somebody to talk so they can feel validated and (let them know) what they are experiencing right now,” Monro explained.

There are various support groups available throughout the year as well, which Monro recommends people look into if they are in need to help.

If you are feeling stressed over the holidays, Monro encourages you to use the resources that are available in the city.

“If somebody is experiencing a crisis or feeling overwhelmed, they are able to go to ICAT, which is in the Aberdeen building that is run Alberta Health Service. They are open all holiday aside from December 27-28 and January 3. If somebody is really in need of support, that is a really good place.”
