Provincial curling playdowns begin Monday in Grande Prairie

Jan 3, 2022 | 10:56 AM

Some of the top curlers in Alberta are in Grande Prairie for the Best of Alberta provincial men’s and women’s curling championships, began on Monday, January 3 at Bonnett’s Energy Centre.

There are twelve men’s and eight women’s teams competing for the right to represent the province at the 2022 Tim Horton’s Brier on the men’s side, and the 2022 Scotties Tournament of Hearts for the women.

Event manager Colin Griffith encourages everyone to check out some high-level curling over the course of this week.

“We are keeping our expectations quite low because of all of the lockdown measures that are in place. Certainly, we are equipped to handle as large an audience as comes out.”

There is plenty of Peace Region representation at the event, and Griffith says one of the interesting stories this week will be that of the Steinke family from Dawson Creek.

“Tracy Steinke played in the provincial championships 19 years ago,” he said. “And this year he is playing with his son (Jordan) on the Scott Webb team, and his second son Tristan is a member of the Sturmay team out of Edmonton.”

Some of the other locals competing this week include Cary-Anne McTaggart and Kristie Moore, who both play for Casey Scheidegger’s rink, the Skrlik sisters from Nampa, and Scott Webb from Peace River.

There will be draws at 9 a.m., 2 p.m., and 7 p.m. daily until Friday.

The playoff rounds go Saturday with the championship finals set for Sunday. The championship final on Sunday is scheduled to be broadcasted on Sportsnet
